‘Everything, I want to try everything’. And you will !
The formal restaurants and wine bars that once characterized the Amsterdam’s culinary landscape have given way to a new wave of laid-back ‘bistronomy’ openings where an informal vibe meets excellent quality small plates of food.
One of these is the hip and trendy newcomer in the south of Amsterdam: Bar Hendrik. On the corner of a spacious square it has conquered a beautiful place where you can relax on the terrace on nice lazy summer days.
Inside it is simple and cosy, a few nice decorations are scattered around, and in the back an attractive bar with a nice range of drinks.
And yes! They have the Kir au vin blanc, which is my standard aperitive when going out for dinner! It is very exceptional that this drink is served and even more rarely that it is made in a good proportion of wine and crème de cassis.
This having said, for me, in this bar it is definitely the food that does the talking.
The kitchen doles out dish after delicious dish of modern small plates: Fine de Claires, pulpo with salted lemon crunch in goat yogurt with lovage, grilled sucreto with white cabbage, vinaigrette and red pepper, scallops in spicy miso with curry foam.. creamy and fragrant and wildly rewarding when mopped up with reams of fresh bread and as dessert a lemon pavlova with lemon curd mousse.
The chef, Rick Hausiel, is a young and talented guy of 23 who has already gained his experiences at several renowned star restaurants in The Netherlands.
The dishes are nicely balanced, the portions just right and his explanations are interesting to listen to. The service is very welcoming and contributes to the pleasant atmosphere.
I am going back again soon to order the dishes I missed!
Don’t postpone culinary joy and discover this new kid on the block yourself!
